Deutzia scabra ‘Plena’ or Bridal Wreath
Notes : With its dainty but dense clusters of tiny, double flowers in white flushed with purple-pink carried on gracefully arching branches, it’s easy to see how the Deutzia scabra ‘Plena’ Bridal Wreath got its name. It is pretty enough for any bride. To continue a white theme into summer, grow it in a mixed border with summer-flowering shrubs such as white Ceanothus and perennials such as white perennial Phlox. Other kinds of Deutzia include the low, spreading, pure white Deutzia gracilis and the hybrid Deutzia ‘Mont Rose’, which bears pink to purple-pink flowers.
This shrub grows best in areas with cold winters and a high summer rainfall, such as Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal and Northern Drakensberg and the Kwazulu-Natal mist belt. It can be grown in drier areas but it is not suited to very dry, inland regions or to the hot, humid parts of the country.
Plant it in a wind-free, sunny position in rich, fertile soil. In hot situations, it will benefit from some shade. Keep it regularly watered, especially in summer in drier regions. Prune it back hard after flowering.
