Australian Hare’s Foot Fern
Notes: The fine, lacy fronds of the Davallia pyxidata or Australian Hare’s Foot fern are pale or dark green and triangular. Slow-growing with thick rhizomes covered with brown, furry scales. It does well in pots or hanging baskets.
Grows easily indoors or on a sheltered verandah, or in a protected position outdoors in moist, frost-free parts of the country.
Plant outdoors at any time of the year in sandy, well-drained soil. Use a coarse mix, such as pine bark, gravel or charcoal, if growing in a pot or basket. This fern needs full shade or semi-shade and should be protected from hot dry winds outdoors. Apply bone-meal or liquid fertiliser in spring.
May be attacked by aphids, mealy bug or scale insects.
