Delphinium hybrids

Notes : Delphiniums are a genus of 250 species grown for their showy flowers mainly in shades of blue and mauve. White, pink, lemon and cream forms are also available. These tall and stately perennials look best planted in a mixed border. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Stake with canes to protect the plants from strong winds. To ensure good quality flower spikes, thin shoots when about 7 centimetres high leaving a minimum of 2 – 3 shoots on young plants and 5 – 7 shoots on older plants. Dead-head by cutting faded spikes back to small flowering side shoots. Water regularly and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2 to 3 weeks. To encourage a second flush of flowers in Autumn, cut back to ground level and top dress. All parts may cause severe discomfort if eaten. Contact with foliage may irritate the skin. Pests and diseases: slugs, snails, delphinium moth, caterpillars, leaf miners, leaf blotch and powdery mildew.
